Blood & Soul – The making of a book trailer – Part I
When I requested bids for a book trailer for my heroic fantasy epic Blood & Soul I was overwhelmed with 100 bids. I’m a fan of epic music such as Two Steps From Hell and Audiomachine. I knew well the feel I wanted. A lot of extremely talented composers bid on the project and sent powerful music pieces. I was overwhelmed. But Patrick Rundblad reached out to me in an email. When we talked on the phone he was genuinely enthusiastic about the project and actually inspired me with his passion. Although we came from completely different backgrounds we were in tune. I knew he was the right person for the project. I sensed his passion for his art and confidence in his talent and skills.
Within a couple days Patrick laid down the first textures of music. I listened to the atmospheric samples. It gave me goose bumps. He had definitely listened and extracted from my jabbering exactly what I was looking for. We collaborated about twice via email with some tweaks. Within a few days he sent me the piece that would be the score for Blood & Soul’s trailer. The opening cello was stunningly beautiful, the choral was full of angst and beauty swirled together in a magical aching melody. The score resonated with mystery and intrigue. It began to soar in the middle and took on that sweeping epic feel that blew me away in a little over 80 seconds – perfect! He had captured the spirit of Blood & Soul. It’s like Patrick had read my mind. The piece did exactly what I wanted to do with Blood & Soul – I wanted to blow readers away with my story and Patrick blew me away his score.
I was working with a team of people to create the trailer and Patrick finished his part earlier than expected. I was embarrassed to admit I was running behind. He took this in stride. We used his track to craft the scenes in the book trailer. Using the natural accents he had envisioned, we completed the project and sent him the video. The music was already great but with the video now in his hands Patrick brought it to an even more epic level by tweaking the music to the visuals.
Patrick’s score was a major part of making the trailer I wanted. It is entertaining and inspiring. He exceeded my expectations with his brilliant piece of music and his professionalism. I feel fortunate to have crossed paths with Patrick.
